History in the Making: the future of the heritage sector

The future for the heritage sector has never been so filled with trepidation and possibility. This is our opportunity, as a sector, to take stock of the changes that have already happened and identify what we need to embrace and take forward from our experience of the COVID-19 pandemic. This webinar will explore whether these changes are cosmetic and seek to find ways we can actively address the inequities that COVID-19 revealed. And, perhaps most importantly, discuss what kind of heritage sector our communities need now and for the future.

This inspiring and thought-provoking session will bring together acclaimed heritage advisor, writer and thought leader Elaine Heumann Gurian and policy and advocacy expert Lizzie Glithero-West, to get to the heart of the key challenges facing our sector framed within the context of current government policy for the UK heritage sector.

Meet the Speaker

Elaine Heumann Gurian

Senior Advisor and Consultant

Elaine Heumann Gurian is a senior consultant, advisor, teacher and writer to museums and visitor centres that are beginning, building or reinventing themselves. Her volume, Civilizing the Museum: the Collected Writings of Elaine Heumann Gurian was published in 2006. Her new volume Centering the Museum, An Anthology will be published in 2021. She was named to the 100 Centennial Honor Roll members by the American Association of Museums and awarded the Distinguished Service to Museums Award in 2004.

Lizzie Glithero-West

CEO, The Heritage Alliance

Lizzie Glithero-West has expert knowledge of a wide range of policy areas including archaeology, heritage protection, gambling and tourism. She is a proud and loud advocate for the sector; she identifies overarching messages from Alliance members and amplifies them across to opinion formers and decision makers in England. Her first love is history and heritage. She has a degree in Archaeology and Anthropology from Oxford, and an MA in History of Art from Birkbeck. In 2014 she was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. In her spare time, Lizzie runs her own influential cultural education website.
